Make use of the vast wealth of technical information on this site by using the search function and by reading through the FAQ and AutoFAQ sections. As for the starter problem, the issue isn't with the starter or with needing to add shims. There's a spot on the flex plate where the teeth (which engage with the starter) are worn down. This can be fixed by replacing the flex plate with one that has no worn teeth. Check the classifieds for one, or post a wanted ad (I have one that I can sell you - email me if you're interested).
